[UPDATE, June 9, 2023: The U.S. Department of Defense no longer is requiring travelers to use an SAP Concur-backed booking system called MyTravel. Instead, DOD travelers will use the pre-existing Defense Travel System. DOD intends to wind down all MyTravel operations by September.]

The U.S. Department of Defense in March began adding users for the prototype of a new travel booking and expense system. Designed by SAP Concur and delivered way ahead of schedule, the system went live with about 1,100 travelers from the Defense Human Resources Activity area.

DOD formed a cross-functional team in 2017 to review travel policy and evaluate solutions for a “modernized travel capability.” Last summer, DOD picked Concur to build the prototype based on its “commercial Software-as-a-Service to book travel, manage travel-related expenses, and initiate travel-related financial transactions.”

DOD’s initial system deployment covers “the most basic business travel,” according to a DOD newsletter. The department will analyze results and collect user feedback to further improve processes ahead of wider roll-out. DOD also plans to add mobile applications, a traveler risk management and safety communications component, business intelligence and, for automating “100 percent” of expense claims, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
