The 570, Part One: Job Market Challenges And How To Change Industries

During the past year, many had their worlds turned upside down. Careers came to abrupt pauses, leaving professionals wondering when and how they’d again be employed. The Company Dime offered free subscriptions to travel professionals who lost their positions due to the coronavirus and about 570 of you took us up on the offer.

To help those with questions about job searches, career opportunities, résumé building and interviewing, and to provide a forum for commiserating, networking and sharing, we’ve now created a two-part conference call based on feedback gathered from a survey of the 570.

Part One will address the reality that the next career stop for many won’t be in the travel industry. We’ll also talk about all things career-related and, if you’re game, welcome you to share your story.

We’re excited to bring two distinguished guest speakers to this forum.

After a dozen years working in travel category sourcing and service delivery at Hewlett-Packard, Lea McLeod now is a career consultant and coach for individuals and teams.

“Your biggest challenges can nearly always be solved by taking action, and feeling confident when you do,” McLeod wrote on her website. “But you get stuck, because you’re not sure, exactly, what action to take.” The goal is to “become empowered, confident and a little more kick-ass than you may feel right now.”

Suzanne Neufang has worked outside the travel industry and inside of it at Sabre and HRS. A year ago she was looking for her next employment opportunity and now she’s executive director and CEO of the Global Business Travel Association, the industry’s largest professional membership group.

“Industry players – and professionals — who survived the seismic changes over the past two decades (or two years!) are not anything like who they were back then,” Neufang wrote in a recent GBTA blog post. “The good got better, and they adapted.”
